How to print passport size photos at home

Turn the free 4x6 print sheet into perfect physical photos with any home printer or local photo shop. Print only after the digital crop is correct.

How we keep this guide updated: we review this page when common printer settings or paper standards change, and refresh examples based on reader feedback.

Print at home vs print at a local shop

Home printing suits you if you print often, want full control over quality, or need multiple copies for repeated forms. A shop is easier when you want speed without managing ink settings, and the result is usually good enough for routine submissions as long as the file is correctly prepared.

Step 1: Choose the right paper

Popular brands in India include Epson, Canon, HP, and Kodak, available on Amazon, Flipkart, and local stationery shops at roughly Rs 150 to 300 for 20 sheets. If you print only occasionally, semi-matte is a safe middle ground: low glare but still polished.

Step 2: Configure printer settings

Critical: never use Fit to Page or Scale to Fit. It changes the photo dimensions. If your printer has a borderless mode, leave it off unless you know exactly how it handles scale, because borderless printing can subtly crop the edges.

Cost comparison

Home printing costs include paper (about Rs 8) and ink (about Rs 5); actual costs vary by printer. For a one-off photo, a local shop is usually the fastest path.

Frequently asked questions

Photo paper of 180 to 200 GSM. Glossy or semi-matte finish works well; matte is preferred for official documents to avoid glare.
Not recommended. Regular paper absorbs ink differently and produces lower quality that may be rejected. Always use photo paper.
Set print scaling to 100% or Actual Size, never Fit to Page. Measure the printed photo with a ruler to verify 35x45mm.
Yes. Save the sheet to your phone or email it to the shop and ask for a single 4x6 print at 100% scale with no auto-cropping. It usually costs Rs 5 to 10.
Six 35x45mm photos, or four 2x2 inch photos for US visa size, with light cutting guides.
Adjust the original photo brightness before processing, and check printer ink levels and paper settings. A test print on plain paper catches this early.
Both are generally accepted, but matte reduces glare and fingerprints. Passport offices tend to prefer matte or semi-matte.
Use a ruler as a straight-edge guide with sharp scissors or a paper cutter. Make smooth single cuts along the outer edges and leave no white borders.
