Passport Photo Size Guide: mm, cm, Inches & Pixels

Every official passport photo dimension, converted and explained. 35x45mm and 2x2 inch in pixels, centimeters and inches, per-country requirements, face framing rules, and print sizes, all in one place.

Quick answers

35 × 45 mm= 3.5 × 4.5 cm = 1.38 × 1.77 in = 413 × 531 px at 300 DPI
2 × 2 in= 51 × 51 mm = 5.08 × 5.08 cm = 600 × 600 px at 300 DPI

35 × 45 mm passport photo: all conversions

The 35x45mm rectangle is the ICAO biometric standard used by India, Pakistan, the UK, and Schengen countries. If your printer or editor asks for pixels instead of millimeters, use the conversions below. For online uploads, portals often specify their own pixel size, for example Passport Seva wants exactly 630x810 px.

2 × 2 inch passport photo: all conversions

The 2x2 inch square is the US standard for passports and visas. It is not interchangeable with 35x45mm: submitting the wrong shape is one of the most common reasons applications get rejected, even when the photo itself looks fine.

Passport photo size in pixels

Pixel size depends on DPI (dots per inch). At the standard 300 DPI used for printing, a 35x45mm passport photo is 413x531 pixels, and a 2x2 inch US photo is 600x600 pixels. For online uploads, ignore DPI and use the portal number: 630x810 px for India Passport Seva, at least 350x467 px for Pakistan NADRA, and 600x600 px minimum for the US. SnapID digital downloads render at 630x810 px for 35x45mm presets, which is sharper than the 300 DPI minimum.

DPI35 × 45 mm2 × 2 in

300413 × 531 px600 × 600 px
600827 × 1063 px1200 × 1200 px

Formula: pixels = millimeters x DPI / 25.4. So 35mm at 300 DPI = 35 x 300 / 25.4 = 413 pixels.

Passport photo aspect ratio: 7:9 and 1:1

The aspect ratio is the shape of the photo, written as width:height. The 35x45mm passport photo has a 7:9 portrait ratio, while the 2x2 inch US photo is a perfect 1:1 square. When you convert a photo to passport size, matching this ratio is what keeps faces from looking stretched or squeezed.

2 × 2 in1:1Perfect square for USA passport and visa
25 × 35 mm5:7Portrait rectangle for stamp size photos

SnapID locks the crop box to the correct ratio for every preset, so the 7:9 or 1:1 shape is always exact. If you crop manually in another editor, set a custom 7:9 ratio for 35x45mm photos and 1:1 for US visa photos.

Passport photo size by country

Always match the document you are applying for, not the country you live in. An Indian passport and an Indian OCI card need different photos.

Face framing rules (why photos get rejected)

35 × 45 mm 70–80%
  • Face height (chin to crown) must be 70 to 80 percent of the photo height.
  • For 35x45mm that means a head height of 32 to 36mm.
  • Leave about 3.5mm of space between the top of the hair and the top edge.
  • Face the camera directly, both eyes open, neutral expression, mouth closed.
  • No glasses, no hats, no hair across the eyes. Religious head coverings are allowed with the full face visible.

Digital upload requirements by portal

Online forms reject photos that are too big, too small, or in the wrong format more often than any framing mistake. Match these numbers exactly.

Printing: how many fit on a 4×6 sheet

A standard 4x6 inch photo print is the cheapest way to get physical copies. Cut along the guides after printing.

Photo sizePhotos per 4×6 sheet
35 × 45 mm6 copies
2 × 2 in4 copies

Print at 100 percent scale with "fit to page" turned off, on matte or semi-matte photo paper. Measure the first print with a ruler before cutting.

Photo size FAQs

For printing at 300 DPI, 35x45mm equals 413x531 pixels and 2x2 inch equals 600x600 pixels. For online uploads, use the portal’s number instead: 630x810 px for India’s Passport Seva, at least 350x467 px for Pakistan’s NADRA portal, and 600x600 px minimum for the US.
No. 35x45mm is a 7:9 portrait rectangle used by India, Pakistan, the UK, and Schengen countries. 2x2 inch (51x51mm) is a square used by the USA. They are not interchangeable.
Multiply millimeters by DPI, then divide by 25.4. Example: 35mm at 300 DPI = 35 × 300 ÷ 25.4 = 413 pixels. Use the tables above instead of calculating by hand.
300 DPI is the minimum for sharp prints. Pakistan’s NADRA specifies 600 DPI. Higher DPI only matters for printing; online portals care about pixel dimensions and file size.
Yes. Print the 4x6 sheet on photo paper at 100 percent scale with fit-to-page off, then cut along the guides. Matte or semi-matte finish is preferred for passport submissions.
The three usual causes are file size over the portal limit, wrong pixel dimensions, and wrong format (most portals want JPEG). Fix the file first; framing is rarely the issue with digital uploads.
