How we keep this guide updated: we review this page when common printer settings or paper standards change, and refresh examples based on reader feedback.
Print at home vs print at a local shop
Home printing suits you if you print often, want full control over quality, or need multiple copies for repeated forms. A shop is easier when you want speed without managing ink settings, and the result is usually good enough for routine submissions as long as the file is correctly prepared.
| Factor | Print at home | Local photo shop |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per sheet | Rs 10 to 15 | Rs 5 to 10 |
| Time | Ready in 5 minutes | 10 to 30 minutes |
| You need | Photo printer and photo paper | Just the digital file |
Step 1: Choose the right paper
Popular brands in India include Epson, Canon, HP, and Kodak, available on Amazon, Flipkart, and local stationery shops at roughly Rs 150 to 300 for 20 sheets. If you print only occasionally, semi-matte is a safe middle ground: low glare but still polished.
| Type | Finish | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Glossy | Shiny, reflective | Vibrant colors, personal keepsakes |
| Semi-matte | Slight sheen | Balanced look, fewer fingerprints |
| Matte | No shine | No glare, official documents |
Step 2: Configure printer settings
Critical: never use Fit to Page or Scale to Fit. It changes the photo dimensions. If your printer has a borderless mode, leave it off unless you know exactly how it handles scale, because borderless printing can subtly crop the edges.
Windows
- Open the photo file and press Ctrl+P
- Select your photo printer, then More Settings or Preferences
- Quality: Best or High; Paper Type: Photo Paper
- Paper Size: 4x6 inch; Scaling: 100% or Actual Size
Mac
- Open the photo in Preview and press Cmd+P
- Click Show Details
- Paper Size: 4x6 Photo; Quality: Best; Media Type: Photo Paper
- Scale: 100%
Step 3: Print and cut
- Load photo paper with the coated side up (per your printer instructions)
- Print one test sheet on plain paper first to check colors, alignment, and size
- Let prints dry for 2 to 5 minutes; avoid touching the printed surface
- Cut along the outer edges with a ruler and sharp scissors or paper cutter
- Measure the first cut photo: it must read exactly 35x45mm
Cost comparison
Home printing costs include paper (about Rs 8) and ink (about Rs 5); actual costs vary by printer. For a one-off photo, a local shop is usually the fastest path.
| Method | Cost per sheet | Photos | Cost per photo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photo studio | Rs 50 to 100 | 4 to 6 | Rs 15 to 25 |
| Local print shop | Rs 5 to 10 | 4 to 8 | Rs 1 to 2 |
| Home printing | Rs 10 to 15 | 4 to 8 | Rs 1 to 3 |
